Dear SMC student:
The Santa Monica College Campus Police would like to alert you regarding two recent crime activities on campus.
Case #1, Strong Arm Robbery - October 17, 2012:
At approximately 7:10 PM yesterday (10/17/12), two male juveniles committed a strong-arm robbery in the Quad area of the SMC Main Campus at 1900 Pico Boulevard.
As the victim, an SMC student, was using her cell phone the subjects pulled it from her hands, causing her to lose her balance as she tried to maintain control of the phone. A campus police officer on bicycle patrol was riding through the area when he saw the crime occur and began following the subjects and requested additional police units to respond.
Due to heavy traffic in the area, the initial officer temporarily lost sight of the subjects, but an additional campus police officer observed them near 20th Street and Pico Boulevard. When the subjects observed the officer, they began to run and split up. One subject was immediately taken into custody by the SMC police at 20th and Pico while the other male ran southbound on 20th. A perimeter was set-up with additional SMC and SM Police units around the college.
During the time that the perimeter was set up, a Santa Monica Police Officer saw a van containing several suspects, including the male juvenile who had run from the SMC Police Officer. A subsequent stop on that vehicle resulted in the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of drugs packaged for sales.
As a result of the quick response by units from the Santa Monica College Police Department and the Santa Monica Police Department, five suspects were taken into custody on various felony charges and there were no injuries. Additionally, one of the adults in the van was a felon wanted for a parole violation and an additional no-bail warrant for drug violations.
Case #2, Sexual Assault - October 18, 2012:
Earlier this morning (10/18/2012) at approximately 5:37 am, a female student reported that she had been sexually assaulted in a women’s restroom located in the HSS Building. Santa Monica College Police Officers responded to the scene and working with the victim, were able to put out a description of the suspect to responding police officers from the Santa Monica College Police Department and the Santa Monica Police Department.
A short time later, a possible suspect was stopped by police officers from the Santa Monica Police Department and identified by the victim as the suspect of the sexual assault. The suspect was arrested by the Santa Monica Police Department and the investigation is continuing.
The SMC Campus Police Department would like to remind everyone of the following safety tips:
* If you feel you are being followed or not comfortable in your surroundings, go to a populated area
* If in your car, keep your doors locked at all times
* Be aware of your surroundings
* Try and walk in pairs with friends or others
* Avoid isolated or dark areas
* Use sidewalks or well travelled areas
I hope you realize that your conversations carry into my house 99% of the time.
90% of the time they are in the middle of the night and wake me up.
I honestly do not care how much jello shots cost so please shut the fuck up.
